Curt Woolhiser (Курт Вулхайзер)

Welcome Curt Woolhiser, our instructor for the beginners group!

Здравствуйте! Сәлеметсіз бе!

My name is Curt Woolhiser, and I hail originally from Ft. Collins, Colorado, where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. I received my PhD in Russian and Slavic linguistics at Indiana University-Bloomington, and have over 25 years of experience teaching Russian all levels from beginning to advanced. In addition to my current position at Brandeis University, I have taught Russian at a number of other universities in the US, including the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University, and the Davis School of Russian at Middlebury College. In my Russian classes I strive to provide my students with a total language and cultural immersion experience, making extensive use of authentic materials and various task-based assignments. I believe that language learning, although it requires patience and plenty of hard work, can also be a lot of fun!

Apart from language teaching, my primary area of interest is Russian and East Slavic linguistics and sociolinguistics, in particular bilingualism, language contact and language policy in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Thus far in my research I’ve focused mainly on Russia’s western neighbors, Belarus and Ukraine, but am eager to learn more about the fascinating bilingual situation in Kazakhstan (and hopefully even pick up a bit of Kazakh along the way : )).

In my free time I enjoy film and theater, traveling, visiting museums, hiking, cycling, boating and cooking. My taste in music is about as eclectic as it comes, including everything from rock, folk, and world music to classical and early music.
